In 2006, a friend of ours who was serving as the Director of Missions for The William Carey Baptist Association in Tennessee, invited me to come with him to a meeting. He explained that a group of pastors met every Monday morning for a time of prayer, fellowship and devotion. He knew that I was not a pastor, but he wanted me to go with him, so I did. Very quickly these men welcomed me into their group and for a solid year we met every Monday morning. Each week I would listen to these pastors share heartbreaking stories, struggles and so much discouragement. Most of them could not afford to hire staff and were bi-vocational themselves. God began to place a burden on my heart for these men and many others like them. A common statement was often voiced in our meetings, "if I had just one more mature couple or one more leader in our church we could get over this," or "through this," or "move to the next level." It was a Friday afternoon out on our front porch swing while I was praying and seeking God's will that He placed a buden on my heart for pastors, and confirmed that this would be our ministry. I remember it just like it was yesterday.
It was four years into our ministry, when another Director of Missions further shaped our path. He heard what we were doing and suggested that we become North American Mission Board (NAMB) missionaries. After interviews, background checks and an intensive period of training, we were commissioned by NAMB in March 2011, under the title of "Church Strengtheners" and assigned to the Madison Baptist Association. We became Mission Service Corps Missionaries, which means we must raise all our own financial support.
